What a total means in football

A total is a bet on the number of goals in a match, not on the winner. Below: how to read the line, how the model estimates the probability, and which mistakes cost money most often.

01

What a total is

The total is the combined number of goals scored by both teams in regular time. Over 2.5 wins when three or more goals are scored; under 2.5 wins with two goals or fewer. A half line leaves no push: one of the two sides always settles. A whole line such as 3 refunds the stake on exactly three goals, and quarter lines such as 2.25 or 2.75 split the stake between the two neighbouring lines.

02

Why 2.5 is the standard line

In the leading European leagues teams score slightly fewer than three goals per match on average, so the 2.5 line splits outcomes almost evenly and both prices usually sit close together. The 1.5 and 3.5 lines are used when a match is expected to be tight or open: the further the line sits from the expected number of goals, the more the two prices drift apart.

03

How the model estimates a total

The model first estimates each team's expected goals from attacking strength, the opponent's defence and home advantage, then turns them into a probability for every score with a Poisson distribution. The probability of over 2.5 is the sum of all scores with three or more goals. It is an estimate over many matches, not a promise for one: even at 60% for the over, roughly four matches in ten end with two goals or fewer.

04

Odds versus probability

A price of 1.90 implies about 52.6% (one divided by the price), and the implied figures for both sides add up to more than 100%: the surplus is the bookmaker's margin. What is worth comparing is the model's estimate against the market's cleaned estimate. When the model gives noticeably more than the market implies, the side has an edge, not a guarantee. A gap of one or two points is noise, not a signal.

05

Common mistakes

Taking the over just because a team attacks a lot, ignoring the opponent's defence and motivation. Judging by the last two or three matches instead of the season. Chasing the total in-play after an early goal, when the line has already moved. Raising the stake after a loss. Totals are a market of small edges even for a good model, so stakes should stay small and level.
