A forecast does not say who will win. It says how likely each outcome is. This article explains how to read the percentages, how to compare them with the odds, and why the long run matters more than one match.
01
What the 1X2 percentages mean
Home, draw and away are the probabilities of a home win, a draw and an away win. Together they add up to 100% and describe the uncertainty before kickoff. A 58% estimate for the home side means that, over many similar matches, the home side would win about 58 times in 100 and fail in the other 42. It is not a team's strength or a chatbot's confidence, but a long-run frequency.
02
How to convert a price into a probability
The implied probability is one divided by the price: 2.00 is 50%, 1.50 is about 66.7%, 4.00 is 25%. Add the implied figures for every outcome of a match and the sum exceeds 100%, usually 104 to 108%. The surplus is the bookmaker's margin. To get the market's clean estimate, divide each implied probability by that sum.
03
Model versus market
Comparing the model's estimate with the market's cleaned estimate shows where the views differ. If the model gives the home side 52% and the market implies 45%, the model considers the home side underrated. That gap is a reason to study the match, not an automatic bet: the market prices in news and money the model may lack, and the model prices in statistics the market sometimes underrates. A one or two point gap sits inside any model's error.
04
Why favourites lose
A 60% favourite fails to win in four matches out of ten. That is not a forecasting error but the forecast itself. Forecast quality is checked over a series of matches: if events rated at 60% happen about 60% of the time, the model is calibrated. One loss says nothing about the model, ten in a row is a reason to look closer, a hundred matches is statistics.
05
The long run and the bankroll
Because probabilities only work over the long run, the stake size must let you get there: a small, level share of spare money on each event, no increases after a loss and no attempts to win it all back in one evening. A forecast helps you understand a match and keep your confidence honest. It is not financial advice, and betting is for adults only.
